Week 9 - Space + Art

Scene from Zenon

Lost in Space

I thought it was kinda cool and scary how the concept of living in space is actually possible now. Like what Professor Vesna stated in the lecture, living in space is not a far fetched dream anymore. I remember when I was young I watched a movie called "Zenon, Girl of the 21st Century" which was basically about a group of people living in space. In the movie people had the ability to go back between the earth and space. It was also kind of funny seeing the show "Lost in Space" in the lecture. Both shows were basically people's imagination of what it would be like to live in space. With all the technology advances, it came true! NASA had released many videos of people living in space to help the rest of the society understand what it is like to live in space (one video shown below). I thought it was funny seeing the juxtaposition between the old space movies and what the reality is. Within the old movies, people sent up to space were wearing all of these "space suits" which kind of made them look like aliens as well. But in reality, the current astronauts in space had been just wearing normal everyday clothes.

It was also interesting looking at the cosmic dancer exhibit as well, seeing how people created art in space. Seeing the sculpture just floating around in space made me wonder what it would be like to paint in space. I think in general, the way people approach art in space would definitely be really different than on the earth. I feel like there would be so much freedom for the artist since there is no gravity, which would allow artists to create pieces that would have never been imaginable on the earth. One example I found was of colorful liquid in space (shown below). These astronauts were able to play with liquid in ways artists were not able to on the earth. It was very mesmerizing to see the colors bubbling inside the circle of liquid.

  1. I LOVED your reference to the movie "Zenon, Girl of the 21st Century." I used to watch that when I was younger too and you're right it fits right into this weeks topic. I also agree that the role of art in space might be very different from its use on Earth.

  2. I think your comment about artists attempting to paint in space is really interesting. I never considered the fact that artists would not be able to paint in the traditional method since the paint would not interact with the page in the same way due to the lack of gravity. I really hope that someone tries to do it one day!

  3. Like Emma already mentioned, painting in space is a really interesting idea. After seeing many videos of astronauts making floating sandwitches, I can only imagine how enjoyable this would be. I agree with you that sci-fi spacewear is very interesting (they seem to like tin foil and metal a lot) with respect to what astronauts actually wear in space. It is always interesting to see what ideas sci-fi movies get right about the future, as well as ideas that seem ridiculous to us today
